Love or Fear
Sunday, 6th June 2010
I was talking to a friend the other day about decision making and she said the most interesting thing - all decisions are based on either love or fear. I’m not sure if I agree with that but I thought it would be an interesting topic to look at this week. Do we actually base all our decisions on just two emotions of love or fear? Or is there more to it?
My friend was referring to the book series “Conversations with God”. The story goes that the author, Neale Donald Walsch, was at a point in his life where things weren’t going well and he was so angry that he decided to sit down and write a letter to God and ask him exactly why his life wasn’t working out the way it should. He wrote a series of questions down and soon began to find answers for each one and this became the foundation for the book series.
I’ve never read the books myself but they sound interesting and I’m fascinated by the hypothesis that all of our decisions are based on either love or fear. After looking at the major principles behind the Conversation with God series, Neale refers to these basic emotions as the “primal duality” which I suppose extends from human evolution and maybe there is something to it. You’ve never seen a depressed Lion have you? (Exclude Madagascar!)
Neale goes on to examine the scenario of a parent who saves a child from being killed in traffic. Do they do this out of love or fear? Essentially it’s a combination of both as it is the parents love for the child that overcomes their fear of their own death in order to risk saving the child from their death. It would appear in this case that love overcomes fear.
And as a the great philosopher Lennon once said “All you need is love!”, although I’m not convinced.
In a final attempt to understand the whole concept I looked back on all the major decisions that I’ve made in my life so far and weighed them up against love vs fear. It would appear that every single one of them had the basis of “for love” or “for fear” attached to them. Interesting...
So what do you think? Is there any truth to it? Do we make all our major decisions based on love or fear? Or is there more to it? This week I challenge you to think about all of the major decisions in your life and weigh them up against love or fear.
Let me know what you think!

Pivotal Moment
Sunday, 16th May 2010
It gives me great pleasure to announce another milestone for Dream,Build,Inspire,Lead! as today we have our first ever guest blog contribution from Lisa Foreman. Lisa is one of my closest friends and one of the few people who I turn to for advice when I get a little lost in life. She has this amazing ability to cut through the crap of any situation and just tell it how it is.
A few months ago I called Lisa up one night and told her about a particular business situation I was in and asked her advice on it. We had a really great conversation and the basis of it was this notion of a “pivotal moment”. I’ll let Lisa enlighten you on the concept:
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
The pivotal moment – a life changing event, a shift in thinking – yes, it is all these things, and so much more.
We all know life passes us all by so quickly – we all go through our ups and downs, but there is a huge pressure forced upon many of us to quickly move on – get on with work, family and our social lives as quickly as possible.
But in our haste, are we forgetting that it’s ok to stop, take stock and fundamentally learn from whatever it is we have gone through?
There’s no doubt about it.
For those of us who have stopped and realised, a “pivotal moment” means something different for everyone.
Some people see it as a crossroads, a turning point in ones life or even simply a twist or shift.
For me, it has come after many years of great sorrow, pain and confusion – it felt like a moment that caught me by surprise - when the “penny dropped” and what I needed to do and the direction I needed to steer my life suddenly became a far clearer map to read.
Don’t be mistaken – it didn’t mean it was a tranquil journey– but the surety I felt about my path certainly made it easier to ride the waves with greater confidence.
Since my “epiphany” as I sometimes refer to it – I have also found myself to be greatly taken aback my other people’s stories and journeys.
Before I took note intently and with interest – now, I listen with an open mind – allowing myself to learn and grow from other people’s experiences of pain, heartache and loss – as well as amazing happiness, contentment and feelings of fulfilment.
The reason that most of us never really learn from our own experiences and those of others, is because I think while we may listen – we seldom really take the time to actually tune in.
We are all so often afraid of ourselves – that little voice in our head that we chose to ignore when we know something isn’t right – but we fight the voice and plough on ahead anyway because to listen is to scary, too confronting, or requires to much change.
I ignored the “alarm bells” as I now refer to it – in my head for almost seven years.
I wish I hadn’t let the pain become unbearable before I had the courage to face what I knew was true.
Thankfully, I have now learnt to not be afraid to be honest with myself about how I feel.
I share this story with people every now and again in hopes they will stop, take stock, learn and above all – be true to themselves.
Clarity will come – but only if you are brave enough to look the truth in the eye.
