And the winner is…
Sunday, 11th November 2007
Well the NT ICT Awards were held last night at Sky City and as you know I was a finalist for the IT Achiever Award for 2007. Unfortunately I didn’t win the award but I’m not really surprised considering whom I was up against.
One of my competitors for the category was Dr Peter Toyne - who is a former Minister of Parliament and now works for a private company called Identeart which utilises technology to safeguard art and craft against counterfeiters and thieves.
The other competitor for the category was J Easterby Woods who runs his own software development company - NTICED and has produced some AMAZING technology such as MARVIN - a multimedia training and education software tool that is used all over the world. NTICED is also involved in the Identeart project and J has previously won numerous awards for his work.
So considering that I had some SERIOUS competition it was kind of a given that I wasn’t going to win, but I really didn’t care. Right from the start all I wanted to do was get my story - BLKMGK and Dream Build Inspire Lead! published in the Awards Programme, as every year they do a bit of a write up about the finalists and I was happy that everyone attending the awards (250 people approx) would read my story and perhaps go visit the DBIL website. Unfortunately this year the organisers decided against publishing the writeups…
Luckily for me though, this year they actually got the finalists up on stage so I was able to walk up there with J and Scott Wilson (who was standing in for Dr Toyne on the night) and compete with them side by side on the same stage. It was AMAZING!!! Little me up against some of the best talent in the industry!
Pics will soon be up in the media section, so keep an eye out for that.
Even though I didn’t win the award, I’m going to leave you with my award acceptance speech because its all about competition and that’s what I’ve learnt from the whole experience - never shy away from competition. Even if you don’t win, the thrill of standing up on stage as a finalist and being surrounded with some of the best talent in the world is truly worth its weight in gold, and if you do happen to win the award its an added bonus!
Congratulations to J on winning the award, Mate you’ve done something special and I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours!
Dream, Build, Inspire, Lead!

Be the Biggest Guy in the Gym!
Ladies and Gentleman,
for those of you who know me, you’ll know that I’m passionate about Health and Fitness. I have this analogy that I use to tell all the young people that I meet around Australia about one of my tips for success - “Be the biggest guy in the gym!”
Let me explain.
When you go to a gym, you see a lot of little guys in there, wearing sleeveless muscle tops and they’re lifting little weights and flexing in the mirror trying to show off what little muscles they have. And yes, in case you are wondering - I am one of those little guys!!!
But then you get the big guy in the gym and he’s all covered up wearing a t shirt and or tracksuit and you take one look at him, and you know that he’s big and that he can lift real heavy.
And that is what us youngsters need to aim towards because right now we’re the little guys. We’re rolling up our sleeves to show off our qualifications, and our project experience and name dropping in the hope that it will put us on a successful career path. But one day a time will come when we walk into a room, and everyone will know who we are, and what we do and we will be just like the big guys in the gym.
So Ladies and Gentleman, I wish to thank you for honouring me with this award because tonight I don’t have to roll up my sleeves…tonight I AM the biggest guy in the gym.
The territory is the land of opportunity, and we’re in the greatest industry in the world, so I encourage you all to Dream great dreams, Build amazing systems, Inspire those around you, and Lead through motivation. Thank you!
***NOTE***
Considering the amount of people I spoke to during the night, who wanted to chat to me about what I do and future opportunities, it really didn’t matter that I didn’t win the award - I was the biggest guy in the gym!
