Internal Conversations

Lately I’ve been mentioning a lot about what I like to call “internal conversations”. You know that little voice in your head that keeps popping up every now and then? Most of you would think I’m crazy when I start talking about voices in my head but let me explain something to you.

We all have some sort of a voice in our head. Remember when you hear a song on the radio for the first time and for some strange reason it just replays over and over again in your head whether you want it to or not? Well that’s part of your internal conversations.

What about if you do something stupid and the voice in your head says something like “dumb ass, why’d you do that?!?” You know what I’m talking about now right?

Well what if that voice in your head started saying positive stuff. Imagine if the voice in your head said something brilliant like “come on, just a little bit further and you’ll finish the exam.” or what about “wake up sleepyhead. You’ve got a lot on today so its time to bring your A-Game!” Wouldn’t that be great to have an internal conversation like that in your head? It would sort of be like a coach pushing you along the way to achieving your goals. Imagine your heros. What would their internal conversations be about? I would love to hear what Branson, Trump, Robbins and Sharma would be saying inside their head.

Sadly most of us find ourselves in negative environments and the internal conversations that we have are filled with influences from that negativity. In fact we are trained so well in these negative environments that when something great happens we automatically try to analyse it and look for the downside and acknowledge it. How sad is that?

It’s a pet hate of mine when people are applying for jobs and they say something like “I know I won’t get it.” My response is ALWAYS “Well then why are you wasting your time? Do something productive. If you know 100% you’re not going to get the job then don’t bother applying for it.” After that they say something like “Oh no I’m not sure but I’ll give it a shot anyway.” and instantly that’s a much better outcome and instantly their internal conversations are a lot more positive.

Well from today onwards I challenge you to say “no more” to any negative internal conversations that you might have. If that little voice starts talking crap, you have to shut it down with a positive conversation straight away. The minute it starts to say things like “dumbass, I can’t believe you did that!” follow it up with “yeah okay that was dumb but Im learning from it and I deserve to do a lot better”. I have a friend who has this really weird ritual that as soon as she thinks something negative she immediately says “cancel cancel cancel” and follows it up with something positive. It’s very cool to watch her in action and she’s achieving some great things.

So start taking control of your internal conversations and you’ll notice instantly that it leads to much better external conversations which will get you one step closer to turning your dreams into reality.
