Can you believe its November already??? Time flies when you’re having fun - and I’ve been having lots of fun this past week! I was in Perth this week for the National Small Business Conference and it was an absolutely amazing experience. I’ll tell you all about it in next week’s post.
As for this week, I want to write about predicting the future as I heard the most amazing story last week when I attended a Craig Rispin seminar as part of October Business Month.
Craig is a futurist - basically someone who researches future trends and travels the world educating others about them. He’s a fantastic guy and I spent quite a bit of time talking to him earlier on in the session and I learnt a lot from him during the seminar.
During his seminar, Craig told us how as a young child he was very much into science fiction and one day met a family friend of his who had just published a new book and wanted to get Craigs opinion on it. The book was entitled “2001 a Space Odyessy” and yes indeed, the man he was speaking to was Sir Arthur C Clark. The book talks about artificial intelligence, extraterrestrial life and human evolution and is an amazing read.
Many years later, in the 21st Century, Craig again caught up with Arthur and asked him how he had so accurately predicted the future all the way back during the 1960s. Clarke’s response was along the lines of “I did not predict the future at all, I merely suggested it...”.
How amazing is that!
Craig went on to explain that anyone who had a passion for science fiction would have read Arthur C. Clarke’s book and would have let their imaginations run wild with possibilities. These people would naturally have an inclination to become scientists, or engineers or astronauts and would have his ideas deeply embedded into them, which in turn would show up in their work - thus creating a self fulfilling prophecy.
I’m absolutely stunned at how one man’s book could have such a profound influence on society. Granted Arthur C. Clarke’s book might not have been the only influence, however the story does illustrate the possibilities of turning dreams into reality if we are passionate about them.
Dream, Build, Inspire, Lead!

This article describes how a computer tool and game theory are being used to predict the outcome of political and business challenges.

I worry that the tool removes the imagination and innovative thinking from the equation, limiting the ability to suggest an alternative future.
Regardless, it was innovative thinking that lead to the tool’s development in the first place!
