Planning for Success
Sunday, 24th January 2010
Have you ever heard of that saying “Don’t have a Plan B”? It’s meant to make you focus on having one plan and being totally committed to that plan 110%. Personally I think its garbage, and here’s the reason why.
Anyone who’s ever done anything great in their life has to go through some sort of failure. These failures may seem quite drastic at first but then you slowly begin to change your mindset to realise that these failures are actually all different type of lessons that you have to learn in order to become successful. Success doesn’t just happen over night, it takes years and years of learning these lessons, passion, dedication, and total commitment to seeing your dreams turn into reality. Have you heard of the saying “The first million is always the hardest?” That’s because you have to learn all these lessons.
Now I’m not saying that you should go out and expect to fail at everything you do because it is a lesson. You should develop the mindset that you will succeed at everything you try to do, but if it doesn’t work out then you need to look for the lesson, learn it and move on to working on achieving your goals. Hence the reason why I say the saying “Don’t have a plan B” is garbage. You always got to have a Plan B, or a Plan C or as many plans as it takes to get to where you want to be in life. Consider this scenario.
Tim’s been working for 30 years at the same company and he’s devoted his entire life to them. He loves his job and he earns good money and his retirement funds are doing well. Life is great and all going according to plan. He doesn’t have a Plan B because he doesn’t need one. Unfortunately for Tim, the corporate wheels have been set in motion and the following week he is fired. Tim is devastated and can’t work out what happened. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do now and his whole world is turned upside down.
Tim’s scenario is quite common all over the world. Life has a way of throwing things in your face. You can consider this unfair but if you truly Dream, Build, Inspire, Lead! then you will realise that these are just lessons that you have to learn in order to turn your dreams into reality. Tim’s Plan A didn’t work out, and it was through no fault of his. So once he’s ready to get back on his feet he’ll come up with a Plan B or a Plan C or even a Plan D, in fact he should come up with as many plans as he can to get to where he wants to be in life.
So this week I challenge you to come up with your Plan B. Imagine tomorrow that if everything around you changed for the worse, what would you do to get back on your feet? Think about it carefully and write down your Plan B. I hope that you never get to use it, but if you find yourself in amongst life’s little challenges, then you know that you can always pull it out and continue on your journey for success.
I’m going to leave you with one final thought. A few young millionaires before the age of 30 were interviewed in the United States about how many businesses they had before finally hitting the jackpot. On average each one of them had 18 businesses before finally getting hitting the right one. You can look at this in two ways. 1. each one of them failed 18 times and never gave up, or 2. each one of them learnt 18 lessons that they finally mastered for them to finally feel successful. I know which way I look at it. Do you?
