The last few of my posts have been a bit intense with tips and tricks on how to turn your dreams into reality so this week I thought I’d lighten the load a bit and feature a clip from one of my all time favourite actors - Will Smith.
I’m sure all of you remember Will from his tv show “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and know that he’s a rapper and have seen him some of his latest movies like i-Robot, Hitch and Seven Pounds. In these movies he’s really come out of his shell but still manages to bring in slivers of his real life charm to give each of his characters that “Will Smith” flavour. It takes real skill to be able to do this and so when I found an episode of him on “The Actors Studio” I was keen to find out what makes him tick.
In this clip Will talks about working with Tommy Lee Jones, the meaning of the word “Jiggy” and also what he did to prepare for the movie Ali. Will does an amazing job in the movie and when you hear what he did, you start to realise the importance of dedication, passion and commitment to achieving a result.
From what he’s saying, he immersed himself into his training routine. Fair enough the boxing lessons but Islamic studies too? That’s really intense but it’s because he trained up in all the elements of Mohammed’s life he was able to pull off such an amazing performance.
So what’s the lesson in all of this? Well Will’s goal was to become Ali. So in order to do that he had to put in the hard work and learn everything about Ali including the boxing, the speech and religious beliefs. So if you have a goal in mind, what would you need to do in order to become a person who has already achieved that goal? So for example if your goal was to earn a million dollars, what would a person who earns a million dollars already be doing? What would they be saying? How would they think? When you start answering these questions you start to come up with character traits and if you start acting out these traits then chances are you will achieve the same results.
It’s a bit like that saying “Fake it until you make it!” except I HATE that saying. There’s nothing fake in what you’re doing. You simply want to achieve a result and you are changing your habits in such a way that will help you to achieve that result. There’s nothing fake about that. It’s real.
So this week I challenge you, take one of your goals and develop a character trait analysis. So say your goal was to win a marathon. Ask yourself “what would a person who wins marathons do to train to achieve that result?” Also think about what that person would do and say. Once you come up with your character traits start behaving in the same way and doing the same things. Pretty soon you’ll find yourself moving closer to your result and ultimately achieving it.
